  • WNDW REGULATOR WAI

  • Why Do Original Window Regulators Fail?

Power window regulators can fail for a number of reasons, including excessive wear of mechanical pieces, rust and corrosion.

In some models, poor-quality plastic parts become brittle and break, and poorly designed components bend and twist over time.

Why Are Dorman Window Regulators Better?

Dorman was one of the first companies to provide window regulators to the automotive aftermarket more than 15 years ago, and we've since become experts at making these replacement parts effective and reliable.

Our engineers examine why window regulators from the original manufacturers fail, and then find solutions for those failure-prone designs. When you see one of our parts with an OE FIX label, that means we found a common problem with an original equipment maker's design, and implemented a creative solution to make the part more reliable or easier to install.

We also have advanced technological capabilities that allow us to integrate increasingly complex technologies into our motors, including printed circuit integration and embedded software engineering.

And we test all of our regulators on actual doors from real-world car models, running them through thousands of cycles, examining everything from how long they hold up to how fast they go up and down. This is the expertise, innovation and quality assurance you can expect from Dorman Window Regulators.

TLDR: Either buy factory or the cheapest one you can find, all the aftermarkets are the same.

I installed this in my 2001 Suburban left rear door. I wrestled the old one out, got the new one in, and the top bolts didn''t fit in my truck. The flange on the bolt is too big to go through the door to hang the unit as intended. They would work if you just bolted them through from the front side, but that is not how it''s designed to install. Luckily the threads were the same and I swapped out my original hardware. My family and extended family has a few of this vintage suburban/tahoe and I have changed a few of these. This is the first time I''ve had this problem, however this is a minor inconvenience. I played with the clamps a couple of times just to make sure, but the operation is a bit suspect. It raises and lowers quickly, but at the very bottom you can here a cable binding noise in the unit and it''s stops about a 1/16" from going all the way into the door. This wasn''t enough of an inconvenience to me and the windows rarely get rolled down, so I''m going to roll the dice that it works, but it did not instill confidence in my choice of window regulator. Dorman or whatever the newest Chinese knock-off name is on Amazon or Rockauto, just buy the cheapest they are all the same. Unless you are going to pay money for a factory part, pick up the cheapest one you can find.

Videos online show you removing more parts than necessary for the 2001 suburban. Take off door panel. Peel left and right sides of plastic away from edge and tape in middle so you don’t have to hold it. With glass rolled up suction cup the window or tape it to door so it won’t fall when you remove the supports. Remove the one bolt holding motor and disconnect the electrical harness. Then loosen the clamps holding the glass and remove four bolts that hold regulator to door panel frame. Once it’s collapsed it will slide out of the open gap opposite the speaker. Slide new one in and attach motor mount and four bolts. Then you’re going to need to reattach window switch and slowly roll window up to secure glass inside the runner clamps. Tighten them and you should be good to go.
The one I bought was marked used but was in original box and looked brand new. Will update in 6 months.

2004 Suburban Left Rear Window Regulator. Old one was seizing on up direction. My dad and I had similar problem on his 2006 Suburban - so it helped me move more quickly on the 2004.
    1. Use online videos to see what is involved. It requires some jostling to remove the old assembly and install the new assembly. But once it all comes together, you''ll be be glad you took on the challenge.
    2. Safety - secure the glass in the UP position with packing tape, wedges in the wiper rubber or a friend. All parts in the door AND the regulator assemblies are razor sharp. Not a big deal if you are moving carefully - get frustrated and start Hulk-smashing and you WILL get cut.
    3. Save ALL of the old nuts/bolts - label and sort carefully. The Dorman unit comes with 2 10mm bolts for the upper mounts. You will need to reuse many of the lower mount bolts and nuts for reassembly.
    4. Two snags for me due to lack of remembering the order of things : 1. Check the wire harness path for the motor assy - it is easy to get it all wrong - take a picture before taking things apart. 2. Inside door handle pull rod - make sure you feed it through the moisture barrier correctly BEFORE reinstalling the moisture barrier.

After installing the Dorman regulator, everything seems to work correctly. Not sure about the reliability. That would be just one of MANY things to be worried about on a 16 year old vehicle. I consider this a good replacement assembly to help extend the life of your GM full size truck/SUV.

I ordered this window regulator based on the overall positive reviews on this site and others. I actually had two window regulators go bad within a few months of each other so I decided to replace them both at the same time. When I got the broken regulators out I was disappointed to find out that they were both the exact same aftermarket Dorman regulators I had just purchased. Looks like the last owner of my Suburban had to replace these at some point and now the replacements have failed. Judging by the fact that I am replacing two regulators that have already been replaced at least once I''m guessing I will be replacing them again. I will more than likely select a different manufacturer for my window regulators if that''s the case.

On a positive note, the new Dorman regulators did install in the factory bolt holes with very little trouble and are currently working good.

Every Dorman replacement part I''ve ever gotten for my 2001 Suburban has worked great, and this window regulator was no exception. After 20+ years of faithful service, the OE regulator finally gave out and seized up. Fortunately, I was able to get the window in the up position before it did. When I located the Dorman replacement on Amazon, I didn''t hesitate a moment before ordering.

Replacing one of these things is not a particularly hard job, but I''ve never done it on this truck, so, I had to take a little time checking out a few YouTube videos before I got started, which were VERY helpful. The part comes with a single page of decent written instructions, but if "a picture paints a thousand words," a good instructional video paints ten thousand. If you know what you''re doing, this job should take about a half-hour or less. If you don''t know what you''re doing, it''ll take longer, but still, not more than an hour or two.

The OE came out pretty easily; the Dorman replacement fit perfectly into its place, and worked like a charm ... my window is back in action, for no more than the cost of the replacement part. Dorman/Amazon did the trick for me again. Five stars.

I have been dealing with both back windows on my 2004 Silverado dropping down every few days due to the failed electric window motors for over 8 years. I replaced both rear driver and passenger motors in less than 50 minutes. Easy replacement. You don''t need to remove the interior door handles or speakers. The new widow bracket will be setting low, just behind the speaker. After you get everything where it needs to be, attach the power to the window switch on the door panel and slowly raise the window up just high enough (while guiding the widow by hand) to get the window holding bracket just above the speaker and then loosen the bolt and slide the window in the bracket and tighten the bolt. FYI driver and passenger doors have different power window assemblies. Carry On!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are even a little bit mechanically inclined, you can replace your own window regulators. I have done 3 of these now for our vehicles. First one took all of about 25 minutes, now I can do them in about 15.

It''s very easy. First, you remove the inside door panel (refer to your make and model/year to see how to do that (all of 3 bolts for mine). Wedge the window in the up position using a rubber wedge. loosen the bolts holding the broken one to the window, loosen the bolts for the broken one holding it to the door metal. Remove the old one, put the new one in and reverse the procedure.

I HIGHLY recommend watching how-to on YouTube to see how to do this. But it is VERY easy and cost-effective. Taking it to a dealer or repair shop would run in the hundreds to have fixed, doing it yourself is much more cost-effective. That is why I have done my own.

So make sure you get the right make/model/year set and do it yourself! It''s really easy!

I had Tire Kingdom replace my lh rear power window regulator when the window fell as I was waiting to pick my son up. I freaked, it was raining, and just plain did not put me in a ''happy place''. They, Tire Kingdom replaced it, I cannot provide the exact cost (most every time we''ve sent a vehicle in there, it''s $600 and it''s a laugh for us, just not funny). Anyway, the window would travel up slower than normal and now when used, the sound of metal scrapping is heard. This product went in easily and was done in under 2 hours. There''s no ''drag'', it works as if it were factory correct. I am recommending that you get this part, Dorman is a reputable brand (I''ve used since the ''80''s), and I''ve had it installed and working since early February 2020.
